Week 2- 8/29/11-9/2/11

Monday-
Opening - Why did the Native Americans of each region of North America develop a unique way of life (culture)?
Mini Lesson - Continue Reading Notes Activity
Work Period - Reading Notes - Southwest, Great Plains, Eastern Woodlands, Southeast
Closure - Students share information.
Homework - Study for test on Thursday....Finish class work
Students need to complete paperwork and have it turned in ASAP!

Week 1- 8/22/11-8/26/11

Monday-
Rituals and Routines; Student paperwork

Tuesday-
Opening - Champs - Independent seat work
Mini Lesson - Use of Resources to meet basic needs - food shelter, clothing, tools
Work Period - Canadian Forest essay
  • Students are to imagine they have been dropped in the middle of the Canadian forest and must survive there for a year.  They are to describe the shelter they will build, the clothes they will make to protect them from the elements, and tools they will make to acquire food.  Students will explain their rationale and how they made use of available natural resources.
Closure - Students share essays.  Students evaluate success of plans.
Homework - Finish class work (if needed)


Wednesday-

Opening - Preview Map from Text pages 28
Mini Lesson - First Americans
  • Beringia Theory
  • Development of culture
  • Rise of Native American Civilizations
Work Period - Four Column Vocabulary Notes - Word, Definition, My own words, Example  (8 words)
Closure - Call on students to share until all vocabulary words are reviewed.
Homework - Finish vocabulary notes if needed.

Thursday-
Opening - Where did the first Americans come from?  Copy and label migration map from text.
Mini Lesson - Development of Native American Culture Groups Lecture and Notes
                            Adaptation to the environment
                            Migration routes into North and South America
                            Eight Culture Groups
Work Period - Color and Label Map of Native American Culture Groups in North America
Closure - How does the environment affect the way people live?


Friday-
Opening - Illustrated Dictionary Entry for ADAPTATION.  How does geography affect the way people live?
Mini Lesson - Guide to Reading Notes Directions - Three features of environment, journal entry that mentions three adaptations for each Native American group. Teacher example of notes and journal entry
Work Period - Reading Notes - Northwest Coast, California, Great Basin, Plateau
Closure - Response Card Activity - Teacher gives characteristics, Student match to culture group.
Homework - None
